Ammonia Synthesis

Ammonia is one of the most widely used raw material in the Chemical industry. It is produced worldwide employing the Haber-Bosch process. Plasma synthesis of ammonia is a novel synthesis method in which hydrogen and nitrogen molecules are excited using Radio Frequency waves to reach plasmic state. The species in this excited state react on the surface of the catalyst resulting in Ammonia formation. The reaction takes place under vacuum. Different catalysts will be employed to understand the reaction pathway undertaking in the plasma phase. Future work will be focused on exploring different feedstocks for hydrogen such as hydrocarbons, synthesis gas, etc. To compare the efficiency of plasmic synthesis with other processes we are also conducting experiments with UV Irradiated Synthesis.
