Graphene Synthesis

Graphene is the strongest material known to humankind. It has versatile uses ranging from use as fibers, catalyst, heat storage, water purification membranes and the list keeps growing with time. It is believed 2-D carbon sheet has potential to revolutionize the electro-chemical device industry.  It was first time synthesized in lab by methane decomposition at high temperature using a copper substrate.

Our research efforts focus on employing cheap carbon sources for graphene synthesis such as pectin rich biomass along with reducing the synthesis energy requirements by exciting the gases with RF plasma. We are also interested in elucidating the growth mechanism when using this plasma assisted technique.
